when was penicillin discovered?
1928 by Alexander Fleming when testing on Streptococci bacteria and going on a trip and returning to find the mould on one of the dishes that had killed the surrounding bacteria
who developed penicillin for commercial use?
Florey and Chain in 1938 they discovered they could grow enough penicillin to help a mouse recover from an infection but when asking for funding in order to grow enough to cure a human the only received £25. by 1941 they had grown enough to test on a human and it worked until they ran out of penicillin
who are credited for discovering DNA?
Watson and Crick discovered the structure of DNA and that it was present in all human cells. But this was with help from Wilkins and Franklin and their work was based on work from the 1800’s
what was the human genome project?
in 1986 the project began to identify the exact purpose of each gene in the human body, compiling a whole map of human DNA. the task was completed 15 years later
what were the magic bullets?
in 1909 Ehrlich developed the Salvarsan 606 which killed the Syphilis bacteria (called magic bullet because it targeted one bacteria) but also unfortunately also killed the patient
in the 1930’s Domagk developed Prontosil which cured blood poisoning. was first used on his daughter
when was the NHS introduced?
1948 after being suggested in the 1942 Beveridge report and minister Aneurin Bevan introduced it. doctors were told they could work privately as well as working for the NHS
