Median Nerve Flashcards
What are the roof and content of cubital fossa?
What is cubital fossa
Content of cubital fossa from medial to lateral side
Median nerve
Brachial artery
tendon of Biceps muscle
Superficial branch of radial nerve
Roof : Bicipital aponeurosis and median cubital vein
Cubital fossa is the triangular shaped fossa in front of the elbow
What is the modification of palmaris longus in the palm
Palmar aponeurosis
Nerve supply of flexor digitorum profundus and where it innervate?
Lateral half: Anterior interosseus nerve
supply tendon to index finger and middle finger
Medial half : ulnar nerve supply tendon to little finger and ring finger
Muscle of forearm supply directly by median nerve:
Pronator teres
FCR
palmaris longus
FDS
Median nerve in the palm gives a motor / recurrent branch. Which muscles are supplied by it?
LOAF muscle
Lumbricals 1 and 2
thenar eminence muscles:
Opponens pollicis
Abductor pollicis brevis
Flexor pollicis brevis
Palmar branch of median nerve which carrying sensory fibre pass through which part pf flexor retinalculum band and where it supply?
Above fr band
It carries sensory fibers to THENAR EMINENCE
In supracondylar fracture of humerus, which nerve is most commonly affected?
Anterior interosseous nerve > median nerve b/c for ai nerve ,its fibres arise at a higher level (above elbow)
What are the features of median nerve injury? ( supracondylar fracture of humerus and ai nerve and median nerve get injured)
All forearm flexor muscles of anterior compartment are paralysed.
flexor carpi ulnaris is normal so have ulnar deviation of wrist
FDS and lateral half of FDP (AIN) are paralysed.
Pronation lost ( p:teres. and p:quadratus(AIN)
Paralysis of loaf muscles: Thenar eminence atrophy
Loss of opposition of thumb: lead to Ape thumb deformity
Sensory loss over
Thenar eminence ( palmar branch affected)
Palmar surface of lateral 3.5 finger loss of sensation
What is Benedictian hand deformity?
During median and AI nerve injury ,
FDS and lateral half FDP ( ain) is paralysed
So
Loss of flexion of interphalangeal joints of midde and index finger , it is called Benediction hand deformity
What is overlapping and pointing index deformity?
Overlapping is as a result of paralysis of lateral half of FDP ( by AIN ) rarely the ulnar nerve supplies the tendon to middle finger which result in loss of flexion of IP joint of ONLY THE INDEX FINGER which is called POINTING INDEX DEFORMITY
What is wrist slash injury?
Features?
Injury on lateral (radial side)
It is the median nerve injury at the wrist ( lower part of forearm)
Features
Paralysis of LOAF muscle
1.thenar eminence atrophy
2.ape thumb deformity
Loss of sensation over thenar eminence ( palmar branch affected)
Loss of sensation over lateral 3.5 digit on palmar side.
WHAT IS CARPEL TUNNEL SYNDROME?
Compression of median nerve while passing BELOW FLEXOR RETINACULUM BAND.
Features are SAME as that of wrist slash injury EXCEPT
Sensory supply of thenar eminence is normal b/c palmar branch of median nerve pass above the fr band
