Doxycycline (monohydrate or hyclate)
A
- Sun-sensitivity
- Take with food to prevent upset stomach (will also decrease the absorption)
- Separate products containing Ca, Mg, Al, & Fe 2 hours before or 4 hours after (ask what OTC products they are taking)
- Use additional form of birth control during and 1 week following last dose

Amoxicillin
A
- Use additional form of birth control during and 1 week after last dose
- CONTRAINDICATION: penicillin allergy

Cephalexin (Keflex)
A
- CAUTION: penicillin allergy

Azithromycin (Zithromax)
A
- Do not swallow with Al or Mg
- Take with food to prevent upset stomach

Ciprofloxacin (Cipro)
A
- Dizziness (caution driving)
- Separate dairy products, antacids, & minerals 2 hours before or 6 hours after dose
- Sun-sensitivity
- Increase caffeine sensitivity

SMZ-TMP: Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim (Bactrim DS)
A
- Sun-sensitivity
- Drink lots of water to avoid kidney stones
- CONTRAINDICATION: Sulfa allergy

Nitrofurantoin (Macrobid)
A
- Brown urine may occur
- Avoid Mg during entire time
- Take with food or milk to increase absorption

Metronidazole (Flagyl)
A
- CONTRAINDICATION: Alcohol will cause profuse vomitting, avoid during therapy and 3 days following last dose
- Temporary metallic taste in mouth may occur
- Headache may occur

Fluconazole (Diflucan)
A
- If skin rash occurs, report to prescriber

Valacyclovir (Valtrex)
A
- Headache may occur
- Does not prevent transmission of STD, avoid sex while sores are present
- Drink lots of water to prevent accumulation in the kidneys
