MECHANICAL DEVICES Flashcards
what’s the fulcrum
a pivot point around which a lever turns
what is the effort
an input force
what is the load
an output force
how to calculate mechanical advantage
Load / effort
Load divided by effort
what is mechanical advantage
making lifting or moving something much easier
what is a first order lever and example
fulcrum is between force and the load
example: pliers, seesaw, scissors
what is a second order lever and give example
wheelbarrow action: fulcrum at one end, effort at the other end, load is anywhere in the middle
what is a third order lever and give examples
fulcrum at one end, load at opposite end and effort applied in the middle
example: tweezers
what is a linkage
a mechanism made by connecting rigid parts. they can change the magnitude of a force, change the direction of it or transform it into a totally different motion
what is the drive gear
the gear that you turn first (input) and drives the driven gear
what is the driven gear
the gear (output) that turns because of the input - driver gear.
what’s an idler gear
the gear placed between a driver gear and a driven gear, so they turn in the same direction
what do pulleys do
help lift a load providing a mechanical advantage
