16
Q

sublimation

A

when a solid turns directly into a gas, enough heat energy is added

17
Q

deposition

A

when a gas changes directly into a solid

18
Q

evaporation

A

when a liquid turns into a gas below its boiling point

19
Q

four indicators of a chemical change

A

color change
production of an odor
formation of gas
formation of a solid

20
Q

what happens to a temperature of a substance during a phase change?

A

it either increases or decreases

21
Q

how did the magnet model show that diff substances have different IF strengths?

A

because when you shook the magnets on different magnets faster or slower to represent energy, the magnets either stayed or spread

22
Q

how can one determine if an endothermic or exothermic phase change occurred?

A

when an object transfers it’s heat to another,it’s an exothermic reaction. when an object absorbs heat from another object, it’s an endothermic change.

23
Q

what are the factors that affect heat transfer

A

conductivity, temperature difference of materials, thickness of materials, area of the material
(CTTA)

24
Q

what is the difference between heat, specific heat, and temperature

A

heat is a form of energy, temperature is the amount of energy an object has per molecule, and specific heat is the amount of energy it takes to rise a materials temp by 1

25
Q

what role does kinetic energy play in dissolving a substance

A

while a solute dissolves in a solvent, the solvent is hitting the solute with enough kinetic energy and force to eventually break off molecules of the solute, surrounds it, and carries it away

26
Q

how can dissolving a substance affect the temp of a solution without chemical change taking place?

A

when a substance is broken apart through solvation, latisse energy is released and the solvent gains that energy, causing a change in temperature
