When MacIan, the MacDonald clan chief got to fort William to swear the oath the sheriff was in Inveraray. The chief had to ride 80 miles through a blizzard but when he got there the sheriff was away for new year so the chief had to swear the oath late, 6th January.
What did Sir John Dalrymple do when he heard the news about the MacIan clan.
He used this as an excuse to make an example of the MacIan clan so as the highlands were loyal to William.
How did John Dalrymple make an example of the MacDonald clan.
The troops, from the Campbell clan, went to stay with the macdonalds for a fortnight. They were fed and cared for. At 5o’clock in the morning on the 13th February they attacked the hosts. MacIan was massacred. The macdonalds were massacred as well. Other people who were trying to escape died trying to climb the snow covered mountain.
