manufacturing processes Flashcards
what is the difference between additive and subtractive manufacture?
additive manufacture involves joining or building up materials. subtractive manufacture uses methods such as machining and carving which involve material removal.
explain the importance of using modelling in the iterative design process
they save time, they avoid potentially expensive production problems occurring later in production, and it reduces the potential for mistakes
what is a prototype
a functioning or non functioning pre-production design evaluation model.
what is rapid prototyping
the use of machines such as 3D printers to product realistic 3D models from CAD files
what is riveting
two pieces of metal are overlapped and drilled, a rivet passes through the holes and the end of the rivet shaft is then hammered over to join the sheets
what is soldering
joins two or more metal components together by melting and flowing a metal filler material into the joint.
what is brazing
involves a higher temperature than soldering. uses a brass filler rod and is used to join dissimilar metals such as mild steel sheet to aluminium and copper.
what is welding, and give two examples of welding
joining metals via heat
- friction welding where a rapidly rotating component is pressed against a stationary component
- gas welding which uses a mixture of oxygen and acetylene
what are knock down fittings
allows products to be assembled and disassembled many times without weakening the joint.
