Making monoclonal antibodies Flashcards
1
Q
what does an antibody bind to
A
the antigen on the pathogen
2
Q
what are antigens
A
protein molecules that are found on the surface of cells
3
Q
monoclonal antibodies are produced from what
A
a single clone of cells
4
Q
each antibody is specific to what
A
to one binding site on a specific protein antigen so that they can target specific cell sin the body or specific chemicals.
5
Q
steps of making a hybridoma cell
A
- mouse is injected with antigens
- this stimulates the mouse to produce lymphocytes to produce a specific antibody to the antigen
- the lymphocytes are extracted from the mouses spleen
- the lymphocytes is fused with the tumour cells
- the hybridoma cells are cloned to create many identical cell
- these are collected and purified
6
Q
how are monoclonal antibodies used for pregnancy tests
A
- urine moves up test to reaction zone
- mobile abs midm to the hormone HCG if present
- mobile abs move down strip and fixed abs in test section bind to HCG
- dye is released
- mobile abs continue down and bind with other abs in the control window
- dye is released to prove test worked
