Makeup of Solar System Flashcards
What are the layers of the sun? Does temp increase or decrease going outwards?
Photosphere, chromosphere, corona
Temps increase going outwards
A stream of charged particles flowing outward from the sun…
Solar Wind
What 3 things defines a planet?
- orbits a star
- enough gravity to be a sphere
- must have a clear path in its orbit
Difference between asteroid and comet?
Asteroids are rocky, located between mars and jupiter. Comets are mainly ice (water/methane) and in kuiper belt and oort cloud
When a comet swings by the sun and speed goes up, the tail…
is like a whip (dust) but the ice part melts and gets discharged into space
According to what theory did our solar system form? What does it say?
Nebular Theory:
- starts with collapse (heating)
- then begins to spin faster (spinning)
- cloud becomes disk (flattening)
Terrestrial planets formed, known as accretion, what is this?
Accretion is solid matter collapsing under gravity to form planets
How did Jovian planets form?
Rocky ice matter and hydrogen beyond asteroid belt condensed. Gravity from ice strong enough to pull in gas matter.
What are the 4 Key features of our solar system?
- planets fall into two categories
- patterns to rotation/orbits of large bodies
- vast number of asteroids/comets
- some exceptions to the rules
