Magnetism And Electromagnetism Flashcards
What is a magnet?
A material or object that produces a magnetic field.
What is magnetism?
The attractive or repulsive force produced by a moving electric charge.
What is a magnetic field?
A region where magnetic materials experience a force.
What is an electromagnet?
Produced when a current flows through a coil of wire.
What are the 2 types of magnets?
1)Induced Magnet
2)Permanent Magnet
What is permanent magnet?
A permanent magnet produces its own magnetic field.
What is an induced magnet?
An object that can become a magnet when it is placed in a magnetic field.
What does line of magnetic flux mean?
Indicates the direction and strength of a magnetic field.
What is portative electromagnet?
Is designed to hold material in place.
What is tractive electromagnet?
Is one that applies a force and moves another object.
What is the motor effect?
When a current carrying wire is placed between magnetic poles. The magnetic field around the wire interacts with the magnetic field it is placed in.This causes the wire and magnet to exert a force on each other and can cause the wire to move.
What are some of the advantages of induction heating?
-The heat is generated inside the object itself,so it is rapid.
-Also,it does not rely on conduction from an external heat source.
what is a solenoid?
is created by wrapping wire into a coil.
what is direct current?
is the current that flows in one direction from the positive terminal to the negative terminal.
What is alternating current?
has current that constantly changes direction alternating potential difference where the positive and negative ends alternating.
