Allows for rapid growth in childhood and adolescence, repairs and maintains body for your whole life.
Name some animal sources of protein
Beef, pork, fish, poultry, milk, cheese and yoghurt.
Name some plant sources of protein
Soya products, kidney beans, lentils, quorn and chickpeas.
What are the effects of excessive protein intake?
Damage to the kidneys.
What does fat do?
Provides a concentrated source of energy, insulates the body to maintain a temperature of 37 degrees and protects vital organs like the kidneys.
Name some saturated fat sources
Butter, sausages, burgers, bacon, cream and cheese.
Name some unsaturated fat/oil sources
Nuts, sunflower oils, avocados, olives, olive oils and seeds.
What are the effects of excessive saturated fat intake?
Coronary heart disease.
What are the effects of excessive intakes of any fat?
Obesity.
What do carbohydrates do?
Supply the body with energy.
What is the difference between starches and sugars?
Sugars release energy quickly, starches release energy slowly.
Name some starch sources
Bread, pasta, rice, couscous and potatoes.
Name some sugar sources
Sweets, fizzy drinks, some sauces, cakes, buns, biscuits.
What are the effects of excessive sugar and starch intake?
Obesity.
