M10: Upper Extremity Muscles - Actions V1 Flashcards
What’s the primary action of the sternocleidomastoid?
flexion of neck
What’s the primary action of the supraspinatus?
shoulder abduction
What’s the primary action of the infraspinatus?
external/lateral rotation of the shoulder
What is the primary action of the teres minor?
external/lateral rotation of the shoulder
What’s the primary action of the subscapularis?
internal/medial rotation of the shoulder
What’s the primary action of the rhomboids?
retraction of scapula
What are the actions of the biceps brachi?
Primary Action:
- Flexion of Elbow
Other Actions:
- Flexion of shoulder
- Supination
What are the actions of the triceps brachii?
Primary Action:
- Elbow extension
Other Actions:
- Shoulder extension
What are the main actions of the serratus anterior?
protraction of scapula and rotation
What are the actions of the deltoid?
The deltoid can be broken down into three muscle groups/regions: anterior (front), middle, and posterior (back/rear)
- ALL parts of the deltoid do shoulder abduction
- Anterior fibers also do internal/medial rotation and flexion (of shoulder)
- Posterior fibers also do external/lateral rotation and extension (of shoulder)
What are the actions of the trapezius?
- Upper Fibers: Elevate scapula, neck extension (elevate head)
- Middle Fibers: Retraction of scapula
- Lower Fibers: Depression of scapula
- Also rotate scapula and elevate clavicle (not sure which fibers)
What are the actions of the latissimus dorsi?
Primary Action:
- shoulder extension
Other Actions:
- shoulder adduction
- internal/medial rotation of shoulder
What are the actions of the pectoralis major?
Main Action:
- horizontal adduction of shoulder
Other Actions:
- adduction of shoulder
- flexion of shoulder
Which muscle does the deltoid have to work with to do shoulder abduction?
supraspinatus
What are the SITS muscles, or what muscles make up the rotator cuff?
supraspinatus
infraspinatus
teres minor
subscapularis
