Lungs Flashcards
Internal tissue respiration
Process of gas exchange between systemic capillaries (blood) and the surrounding tissue fluid and cells
External respiration
Process of absorption of oxygen from atmosphere into the pulmonary capillaries (blood), and CO2 is excreted
What are the three processes in conditioning air?
Humidity, filter and warm
What structures contribute to humidity?
Secretions of seromucous glands, secretions of goblet cells
What structures contribute to filter?
Secretions of seromucous glands, secretions of goblet cells, ciliated epithelium, vibrissae (thick hairs)
What structure contributes to humidity, filtration and warmth?
Nasal conchae (bony shells)- has a larger surface area of respiratory epithelium that air is exposed to. There is a rich blood supply under epithelium here for heat exchange.
What structures contribute to warm?
Rich blood supply
What is the respiratory epithelium?
pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium, goblet cells (non-ciliated, mucus producing) and basal cells ( produce new skin cells)
What does the food pass through to reach oesophagus?
Must pass through oropharynx and laryngopharynx (parts of the throat)
What is the role of the soft palate?
The soft palate closes nasopharynx the glottis is closed and the esophagus forced open
Path of O2 air
Passes from the lung to the left cardiac pump to the cells
Path of de-O2 blood
Passes from cells to right cardiac pump to lungs
