LU3: all-or-none law Flashcards
What is the all-or-nothing law
The size of an action potential is not affected by the strength of the stimulus, the weaker the stimulus does not produce a weaker action potential. If the neuron receives a stimulus of sufficient strength, it fires but if weaker then it does not fire this is the all or nothing law
What is the neural impulse
A signal that must be transmitted from a neuron to other cells
Where does the neural impulse transmission take place
in special junctions called Synapses
In synapses, what chemical do the terminal buttons release
neurotransmitters
What is the synaptic cleft
A microscopic gap between the terminal button of one neuron and the cell membrane of another neuron
What is the presynaptic neuron
The neuron that sends a signal across the gap
What is the postsynaptic neuron
The neuron that receives the signal
What are Neurotransmitters
They are the chemicals that transmit information from one neuron to another
What are synaptic vesicles
Within the buttons most of these chemicals are stored in small sacs called synaptic vesicles
