Describe the conditions in which men fought in the trenches of World War 1
A
- long, narrow ditches dug into the ground where soldiers lived
-designed to protect World War I troops from machine-gun fire and artillery attack from the air. - very muddy, uncomfortable and the toilets overflowed.

- Countries were competing for resources and territory
- led to a race for colonies in Africa and Asia. Imperialism caused rivalry and mistrust among European nations and created an arms race,
- as countries sought to build up their military forces to protect their colonial interests.
- This led to the formation of two rival alliance systems in Europe, the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance, which eventually sparked the war.
