Describe the conditions in which men fought in the trenches of World War 1

A
  • long, narrow ditches dug into the ground where soldiers lived
    -designed to protect World War I troops from machine-gun fire and artillery attack from the air.
  • very muddy, uncomfortable and the toilets overflowed.
  • caused some soldiers to develop a problem called trench foot.
  • the threat of death kept soldiers constantly on edge, while poor living conditions and a lack of sleep wore away at their health

A
  • Countries were competing for resources and territory
  • led to a race for colonies in Africa and Asia. Imperialism caused rivalry and mistrust among European nations and created an arms race,
  • as countries sought to build up their military forces to protect their colonial interests.
  • This led to the formation of two rival alliance systems in Europe, the Triple Entente and the Triple Alliance, which eventually sparked the war.
