Localisation of function in the brain - The Cortex Flashcards
where is the motor cortex located?
frontal lobe
at the back
define motor cortex
controls voluntary movement in the opposite side of the body
motor cortex - damage
loss of control over fine movement
where is the brocas area located?
localised + lateralised to the left of the motor cortex
where is the somatosensory cortex located?
at the front of parietal lobe
separated from motor cortex by a ‘valley’ called central sulcus
define somatosensory cortex
sensory info from the skin is represented here
where is the visual centres?
occipital lobe
what does the visual centres do?
each eye sends info from the right visual cortex to the left one (vice versa)
visual centres - damage
if left hemisphere damaged
blindness in part of the right visual field of both eyes
where is the auditory centres?
temporal lobe
what does the auditory centres do?
analyses speech-based information
auditory centres - damage
partial hearing loss
more extensive the damage, more extensive the loss
where is the wernicke’s area found?
the left hemisphere of the temporal lobe
