Democracy
a form of government in which everyone has certain rights that are balanced by responsibilities. Citizens have the right and responsibility to choose the people who govern them.
Democratic System
one in which citizens have a voice in decision making. There are four main principles/pillars to think about when talking democracy, equity, freedoms, justice and representation.
Rights
In a democracy, are things specifically allowed, and they provide protection to the people of a country by their government. In a democracy, it’s the government job to protect our rights and freedoms.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities are the duties of an individual or group in our society. It is something that you are expected to do. In Canada with every right, there is a responsibility. Some of the responsibilities in society include obeying the laws, paying taxes, voting, speaking up about discrimination and injustice, and being involved in your community.
Justice
Justice means we have a system to make sure that everyone is treated fairly.
Equity
Treating people fairly; sometimes accommodations need to be made so that things will be equal or fair for everyone.
Freedoms
Democratically means that people can act without interference from others or the government.
Representation
In a representative democracy citizens elect their representatives to govern and make decisions on their behalf. In Canada we vote for the representatives that make decisions for us.
Local Government
The level of government empowered by the provincial or territorial government, whose mandate is to make decisions and bylaws relating to local issues and services.
Provincial Government
The level of government whose constitutional mandate is to make decisions and pass legislation relating to provincial issues and services.
Municipal Area
Is a region that has its own local government
Municipal District
Is a rural area that has its own local government
Urban
Are places like cities, towns and villages - run by a mayor
Rural
Municipal district and counties - run by a reeve
First Nations and Metis Settlements
First nation community - run by a chief
Councillor
Person elected to local government
Revenue
Income - money made
Expenditure
Expense - money spent
Bylaw
A law passed by local government
Motion
Is an idea or proposal discussed and voted on at a meeting
