living world Flashcards
what is an ecosystem
a biological community of interacting organisms and their environment
give an example of a local small scale ecosystem
pond, hedgerow, woodland
give an example of a global scale ecosystem and their more common name
BIOMES
tropical rainforest
deciduous woodland
what does biotic mean
living components of an ecosystem
what does abiotic mean
non living components of an ecosystem
give an example of an abiotic part of an ecosystem
soil
dead leaves
sticks
rocks
sunshine
rain
wind
water
relief
give an example of a biotic part of an ecosystem (oak woodland)
woodlice
birds
mice
oak trees
nettles
wildflowers
algaes
insects
fungi
what is a producer and give an example
producers concery energy from the environment (mainly sunlight) into sugars (glucose)
the most obvious producers are plants that convert energy from the sun by photosynthesis
what is a food web
a food wed shows all the connections between producers and consumers in a more complex way (web rather than chain)
what are consumers
consumers get energy from the sugars produced by the producers a pond snail is a good example of a consumer because it eats plants
what is a food chain
a food chain shows the direct links (chain rather than web) between producers and consumers in the form of a simple line
look at the nutrient cycle
i cant put a picture in bc im not paying money
what is leaching
water goes over soil and removes nutrients
tropical rainforests are
close to the equator
have a high temp and lots of rainfall
cover 6% of Earth’s land surface
polar biomes are
mainly in greenland and antarctica
