Living Things In Thier Environment Flashcards
What causes acid rain?
When sulfur + oxygen = sulfur dioxide/SO2 goes through the air and goes into the raindrops. This creates acidic rain.
What do we call oil, coal and gas?
Non-renewable sources or fossil fuels.
What is a renewable source?
A renewable source can be easily replaced, won’t run out and don’t produce carbon dioxide to make electricity.
What is a non-renewable source?
A non-renewable source cannot be replaced, because they take millions of years to form. They will one day run out because we are using them faster than they are being made.
What is Geothermal energy, hydroelectric energy, solar energy, wind energy, biomass energy, tidal energy and wave energy?
Is is energy generated by the earth, river sun, wind, plants, sea tides, sea waves.
What types of chemical pollutants do we use on our crops?
Pesticides and insecticides.
What is the atmosphere?
It is a layer of air around the earth that allows us to breathe, plants to photosynthesise, makes rain, keeps the Earth warm and shields us from harmful radiation.
What is a producer?
A producer is an organisms that creates its food inside its own body using photosynthesis.
What do decomposers do?
Decomposers break down dead organisms, making more nutrients for primary consumers.
What does the arrow show in the food chain?
The arrow show the direction of the flow of energy. In simpler terms, who gets eaten by who.
What is a habitat?
A habitat is a place where an organisms lives that provides them shelter, food, water and space. Where particular organism lives.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is when all organisms, with non living factors, in an environment.
What is biomass?
Biomass is the amount of stuff in an organsism.
What is a community?
A community is when all the different species living in a habitat.
What is variation?
Variation is what makes us different.
How can you have different looking features?
You have different genes that you inherit from your parents and depending on the environment.
What is a species?
A species is an animal that can interbreed with another animal to get an offspring. The offspring must also be able to interbreed and have an offspring.
