usually deals with moral truth or a generalization about human existence.
allegory
the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words. The repetition can reinforce meaning, unify ideas, and/or supply a
musical sound.
alliteration
a direct or indirect reference in a work of literature to something which is presumably commonly known.
allusion
a word formed by reordering the letters of another word, such as satin to stain
anagram
a similarity or comparison between two different things or the relationship between them. can explain something unfamiliar by associating it with or pointing out its similarity to something more familiar.
analogy
comes from Greek roots meaning “beside one another.” it’s a type of parallelism that refers to the grammatical or rhetorical framing of words, phrases, sentences, or paragraphs to give structural similarity to a larger unit of composition and carried throughout.
anaphora
the character or force in society or nature that opposes the protagonist.
antagonist
the juxtaposition of contrasting ideas (or linking contrasting ideas, often in parallel structure)
antithesis
the repetition of similar vowel sounds within non-rhyming words
assonance
the person or people who read or listen to what the writer or speaker says
