Round character
Highly developed character with many traits
Charater
Individuals who participate in the action of literary work
Flat character
Charter who exhibits few traits, not well developed and we know little about them
Static character
One who remains the same through out the story
Dynamic character
One who changes through out the story
Direct characterization
When the writer tells you exactly what they are like
Indirect characterization
You learn about them through other things. (Physical appearance, actions, what they say, what others say about them.)
Internal conflict
One that occurs within a character
External conflict
A character in conflict with an outside force (nature, another character, physical obstacle)
Plot
Sequence of events in a story
Setting
Time and place of the action in a work of literature
Theme
Underlying message about life or human nature that the writer shares with the reader. Typically this is not stated directly but must be inferred
Allusion
Indirect reference to a famous person, place, event or literary work
Diction
A writer’s or speaker’s choice of words and way of arranging the words in a sentence
Foreshadowing
A write’s use of hits or clues to suggest events that will occur later in the story
Protagonist
Main character in a work of literature who is involved in the central conflict of the story
