Anachronism
Element in a story that is out of it’s time frame; could be for humor or due to poor research
Analogy
Clarifies/explains unfamiliar concept, object, etc.
Anapest
Poetic foot that follows pattern unaccented, unaccented, accented. Trying to convey a rolling, licking, moving rhythm.
Anecdote
Short and often personal story used to emphasize a point, develop character, add humor
Antagonist
Force against goals of protagonist. Often villain, but can be good guy.
Antecedent
Word of phrase to which pronoun refers
Anticlimax
Often disappointing, sudden end to intense situation.
Antihero
Protagonist who carries action of literary piece but does not embody classic characteristics of courage, strength, and nobility.
Aphorism
A terse statement that expressed a general truth or moral principle; sometimes considered folk proverb.
Apostrophe
Rhetorical figure of direct adders to a person, object, or abstract entity
Apotheosis
Elevating someone to the level of a god.
Archetype
Character, situation, or symbol that is familiar to people from all cultures because it occurs frequently in lot, myth, religion, or folklore
Assonance
Repeated use of a vowel sound (how now brown cow)
Aubade
A poem or song about lovers who must leave one another in early hours of the morning.
Ballad
Folk song or poem passed down orally that tells a story which may be derived from an actual incident or form legend or folklore.
Blank verse
I rhymed poetry; used by Shakespeare.
Cacophony
Harsh, discordant sounds, unpleasant to eat (ex: nails against chalk board)
Carpe Diem
Seize the day
Catharsis
Refers to emotion cleansing or feeling of relief
Colloquial
Of or relating to slang or regional dialect, used in familiar every day conversation.
Conceit
Far-fetched comparison between to seemingly unlike things
Consonance
Same consonant sound in words with different vowel sounds (work, stack, ark)
Conventional Character
Character with traits that are expected or traditional.
Couplet
Two successive rhyming liked of the same number of syllables, with matching cadence
Alliteration
Repetition of accented consonant sounds at the beginning of words that are close to each other (big, bad, barking dog)
