LIT 3.1 - Liem Violent Encounters Flashcards

1
Q

How can Homocide be used as an indicator for violence as a whole? Liem

A

Homocide is often seen as the most reliable indicator of crime because authorities cannot ignore homicide.

Homicide shares causation and reasoning with other risk-taking behaviours such as alcoholism and suicide thus making it a public health problem.

Q

Why study suicide and homocide together? Liem

A

Shared causation and reasoning. An interdisciplanry approach to understand the underlying conditions that contribute to risk-taking behaviour and contribute to ap preventative approach.
The idea of studying homicide and suicide together as a response to larger societal issues can be traced back to the 19th century.

And was later called dual law and law of inversion by morselli and ferri. Specialisation lead to a separation of these phenomenon in theory and practice.

Q

What is the myth of the monstrous murderer? Liem

A

Public discourse portrays homicide offenders as monsters with severe psychological conditions.

However, research shows that most homicide occurs between people who know each other and the offenders are not typically suffering from mental illnesses.

Q

Why is the myth of the monstrous murder so hard to debunk? Liem

A

The myth of the monstrous offender is perpetuated by the lack of offender narratives and the low homicide rate in western Europe. This leads to heightened fear.

Q

How does Liem look at violence sensitivity?

A

A decline in crime has led to an expansion of the concept of violence to include behaviours that were previously considered normal.

Inflation of the concept of violence leads to the inflated perception of security threats. To address this Liem calls for renewed appreciation of offender narratives.

Q

Why are encounters important when studying violence?

A

Both between researchers and research subjects they study it is important to prevent stereotypes by having encounters.

Sharing offender narratives help demystify homicide and challenge the monster perception.
