Lipids Flashcards
What are the similarities and differences between the two?
Both have fatty acids bonded together with glycerol with a ester bond
Phospholipids have one less fatty acid but a phosphate group attached to the glycerol.
What is the fucntion of triglycerides and the structures functions?
Hydrocarbon chains contain lots of chemical energy. When broken down it is released.
They are insoluble so won’t affect water potential as the clump together as insoluble droplets as there hydrophobic heads face inwards.
Function of phospholipids and structures functions?
Make up bilayers of membranes.
The centre of the layer is hydrophobic so water soluble substances can’t easily pass.
What is the test for fats and how its done?
Emulsion test
Shake sample with ethanol for minute so it dissolves then pour solution into water. If positive a milky emulsion will form.
What are the two main lipids?
Triglycerides and phospholipids
