linear accelerator components Flashcards
electron gun
supplies electrons needed for xray production an injects them into the accelerator guide
supplies RF power for the accelerator guide,
magnetron/klystron
transports RT power from the magnetron to the accelerator guide
waveguide
one way door int he wave guide that allows RF into the accelerator guide but not back out to prevent damage to the magnetron
circulator
forces the electrons around a bend so they exit the gantry head in the appropriate orientation for treatment
bend magnet
the lead filter that attenuates some of the beam in order to provide a more uniform dose distribution
flattening filter
parallel plate chambers that check dose rate, integrated dose, and symmetry
ion chambers
placed in the path of the beam for electron therapy.
scattering foils
for low energy linac the most prevalent interaction
Compton scattering
one of the electrodes in the X-ray tube (negative side). consists of the filament and focusing cup. primary function is to produce electrons and focus the electron stream toward the metal anode
cathode
positive side of the xray tube. receives electrons from the cathode as a target, dissipates the heat as a result of x-ray production and serves as the path for the flow of high voltage
anode
a portion of the anode. this is the point at which x-ray photons are produced (focal spot) and begin to fan out in a divergent path.
target
an arrangement of shielding material designed to define the x and y dimensions of the beam of radiation
collimator
