Limestone Flashcards
What chemical composition of Limestone
Calcium carbonate (CaCo3)
What type of rock is Limestone
Sedimentary
Places in the Caribbean with Limestone
Belieze, Barbados, Jamaica
What is the structure of limestone
distinct cracks/joints, layers along bedding planes, coarse texture with large pores
Permeability of limestone
Very permeable
Colour of limestone
Light coloured
Processes in limestone areas
Carbonation, Evaportation/depositon
What is Carbonation as it relates to limestone
the changing and dissolving away of limestone, forming pits and holes
What is Evaporation/deposition as it relates to limestone
A thin layer of calcium carbonate in solution is deposited in caves as the water drips from the ceiling onto the floor
What is Karst
Karst is the given name to all landforms in areas of limestone rock
What are the surface features of Limestone
Dry valleys, swallow holes, depressions, limestone pavements (clints & grykes), Conical hills, dolines, hums, uvalas
What are the underground features of limestone
Caves, passages, stalactites, stalagmites, pillars, subterranean streams
What are Clints and grykes
When rain falls, Carbonation in weaker joints and cracks causes pitting and wearing of the surface into grooves, leaving small ridges in between. The ridges are clints and the worn areas are grykes
What is limestone pavement
is a surface with almost no soil
What are Swallow/sinkholes
They are known as enlarged depressions. Carbonation enlarges joints in the limestone to form swallow holes.
