light Flashcards
what is light made out of?
Photons
what does transparent material do?
they transmit light through them
what does translucent material do?
transmit some light through them but not all
what does opaque material do?
absorb light or reflects light.
how is a shadow made?
light source is blocked by an object, casting a shadow behind the object.
how is the size of a shadow determined?
depends of the distance from the light source.
what is it called when light bounces off something?
reflected
what happens when light goes through dense material
it will bend and seem to be farther away than it really is.
what are mirages?
they are formed by the refraction of light as it passes from less dense hot air to make cooler less dense air
why do you see fake pools of water on the road during a hot day?
the light bends as it passes through the air making it look like there is reflective water on the ground.
whats a mirror?
they are polished objects that reflect light
whats a plane mirror?
a flat mirror that makes the image look like its behind the mirror itself
is the image of a plane mirror inverted?
yeah
what happens to a plane mirrors image if you move away and walk close to it?
the image moves with you and never changes.
whats a concave mirror?
its curved inwards like a cave hence the name.
what do distant objects look like on a concave?
they seem small and inverted
what happens when you approach the concave closer?
object still gets inverted but also gets bigger
if a object is between the focal point on the concave, what happens?
become large and up right
whats a convex mirror?
curves outward.
how do images look on a convex mirror?
behind the mirror and smaller than they are. you can also see more of a room compared to a plane mirror
what are the rays called that split from a convex mirror?
lingering rays
how does light bend through glass?
bends through glass then bends again as it goes through the air.
what are lenses?
a lens is a curved piece of transparent material that bends light in a controlled way. they can cause light to converge or diverge as light passes.
explain a concave lens
thinner in the middle, they diverge the light rays, and image is formed up right and smaller than actual object.
