Who is the AHJ?
Authority Having Jurisdiction. (Ultimately responsible for interpreting wether or not an application, situation or installation is code compliant).
Examples of AHJ’s
Code Enforcement Official, Fire Chief, Fire Marshal, Public Safety Officer (large facilities & schools).
Who is FDI?
Fire Door Inspector.
What does the FDI do?
Inspects listed and labeled fire door assembles according to guidelines in NFPA 80. And provide written reports to the AHJ and Building owner.(He is responsible for keeping current on codes laws, fire door assemblies and past building & fire codes).
What is the NFPA 80?
Standard for Doors and other Opening Protectives.
Who is the IFDIA?
International Fire Door Inspector Association. (Promotes high standard of professionalism, business ethics and inspection procedures.)
IFDIA Code of Ethics. What are the three main categories?
1) Duty to the Public
2) Duty to Continue Education
3) Duty to the Profession & IFDIA
Summarize IFDIA Code of Ethics 1) Duty to the Public.
IFDIA member shall: a) abide by this code of ethics & follow IFDIA Standards of Practice.
b) Not engage in practices damaging to public or discrediting to FDI industry.
c) be fair, honest, impartial, act in good faith with public & code officials.
d) don’t discriminate, comply with discrimination laws.
e) truthful regarding your services & qualifications.
f) no undisclosed conflict of interest w client.
g) unless it affects safety of others or breaks the law only tell inspection info to client or AHJ unless you have written approval from client.
h) Act in the best interest of client unless it breaks laws or Professional Code of Ethics.
i) Use written contract that specifies services to be performed, limitations of services & expected fees.
j) Comply with gov rules & licensing requirements of your jurisdiction.
k) Do not fix or offer to fix for a fee repairs to doors or frames on which you or your company has prepared inspection rpt for IFDIA. for 12 months.

a) Comply with IFDIA’s current Continuing Ed Requirements and read email updates of Codes & Standards.
b) Re-enroll & pass Swinging Type Fire Door Inspector Class every 3 yrs.

a) Strive to improve Fire Door Inspection Industry by sharing your lessons, experiences & experiences.
b) assist in disseminating & publicizing benefits & importance of Fire Door Inspections.
c) Don’t do anything that will reflect bad on the IFDIA.
d) Abide by current membership requirements
e) Abide by message board & forum rules.
f) Abide by Terms of Use on IFDIA web site.
Building Owners must ensure that all fire door assemblies are compliant w NFPA 80. They can have their own Fire Door Inspector if large property or institution. To avoid conflict usually hire outside inspection.
The building owner is responsible for:
Giving you access to their facility, provding plans or blue prints for larger buildings, safe work environment, meeting w you to determine cost for your services.
Working with AHJ to determine which if any doors are non- compliant.. repairs needed, based on your report(FDI) & AHJ. (your duty meet w owner & file report, you can recommend a repair company).
Building owner must update you re: completion of doors needing to be brought up to code for re-inspection.
Building owner pays all fees.
What is the role of the independent Listing and Labeling Agency?
Provide independent Product testing and certifications.
Factory follow up programs on products tested ad listed.
Listing and labeling are found on?
Fire Doors, fire door frames, builders hardware & other fire door assembly components.
