‘the idea… should set alarm bells’
benigni
‘considered clowns as the maximum of tragedy’ - Guardian
opening shot
fable
its not real - this is a film that’s from Joshuas pov get out cause for how ridiculous the get outs are - Joshua didn’t know or see the brutality links to leaving the dinner and Joshua is asleep whilst they bump into the bodies - metaphorical for what the film is about
key points
second half - how one sequence is different from the two parts - relationship between guido and Joshua is shot differently (book shop and guido death)
film uses sound motifs
colours, sound, lighting
minor keys in ending gets worse film takes a turn, think of lighting dark greys blues sapping out of lighting - choices of lighting fronted, one primary lighting not backlit just focusing on guido
as track continues..
you can hear ‘La Vita A Bella’ playing lightly in the background, but its being suppressed by the heavier instruments as the composition continues the sounds deepen and here’s a woodblock that sounds like something running through the forest at night
once guido is caught
all non-diegetic music stops, highlighting the reality and fear we feel for him
shot reverse shot
shot reverse shot of Joshua and guido winking as he does the robotic like walk overlapped with the SFX, reminiscent of the book shop scene when he did it as the German soldiers took him to the prefix
we don’t see
guido being killed because 1) Joshuas pov but 2) the film isn’t about death and the horrors of the holocaust, it is about a father and his relationship with his son during a time of such terror
