LESSON 8 - maximal oxygen uptake Flashcards
what is VO2 ?
the maximum amount of oxygen that an individual can utilize during intense or maximal exercise
what three organs work simultaneously together during maximal oxygen uptake ?
lungs, heart, and muscle
what is the physiological definition for maximal oxygen uptake ?
the highest rate at which the body can take up, transport, and utilize oxygen to perform muscle work
what are the two protocols in regards to measuring VO2 ?
ramp protocol and step protocol
what is the ramp protocol ?
- ease into it slowly
- change barely is detected
what is the step protocol ?
- increase in a step function
- ex. is walking, to eventually a slow jog, to a jog
does It matter which protocol you use to hit VO2 max ?
not at all (will regardless hit the same VO2)
what is the primary criteria for determination of VO2 ?
the VO2 fails to increase despite a rise in speed or work rate (i.e., a “plateau”
what happens when you hit your max threshold (VO2) ?
evidence of plateau
what are the two secondary criteria for determination ?
- HR
- RER
how do we measure Heart Rate ?
220 - age
how do we express VO2 max ?
female/male number x1000 / by body mass
when we are looking at VO2 max in regards to how to express it, what unit are we using ?
L per min (liters of oxygen consumed in one minute)
what is the normal range for female (expressing VO2) ?
2.0 - 4.5
what is the normal range for males (expressing VO2) ?
15 - 60
