lesson 4 Flashcards
air mass
a huge body of air that has the same temperature, humidity, and air pressure at any given height.
four major types of air masses are
Maritime tropical Continental tropical, Maritime polar, continental polar
jet streams
bands of high high-speed winds about 10 kilometer above earths surface
front
boundary where unlike air masses meet but do not mix
colliding air masses can form four types of fonts
cold fonts, warm fonts, stationary fonts, occluded fonts
cold font
heavy rain or snow may fall
warm font
rainy or cloudy with heavy rainfall
occluded
cut off, as in a front where a warm air mass is caught between two cooler air masses
stationary fonts
cold and warm fonts meet and do nothing to each other
cyclone
swirling center of low air pressure that flows counter-clockwise
cyclones and decreasing air pressure are associated with
clouds, wind, and precipitation
anti-cyclone
high pressure centers of dry air that spins clockwise
the descending air in an anticyclone generally causes
dry, clear weather
