Lesson 2 Cell Structure Flashcards
Cell wall
Part of a plant cell that surrounds the outside of the cell and provides the plant with a definite shape
centriole
small round organelle near nucleus that are responsible for forming spindle fibers used in mitosis and cell division.
chloroplast
organelle in plant cells where photosynthesis occurs
chromatin
material that chromosomes are made of and consisting of protein, RNA and DNA
chromosomes
threadlike structure of nucleic acids and protein found in the nucleus of most cells that carries genetic information In form of genes.
cytoplasm
material surrounding the nucleus in a cell that contains organelles
cytoskeleton
microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in cytoplasm that provides shape and coherence.
endoplasmic reticulum
network of membranous tubules in cytoplasm that usually has ribosomes attached and is involved in making proteins and lipids
Golgi apparatus
complex of vesicles and membranes in cytoplasm that is involved in secretion and intracellular transport
lipid bilayer
term referring to structure of cell membrane because it is composed of two layers of fat cells organized in two sheets
lysosomes
organelle containing enzymes that is responsible for breaking down worn out cell parts and damaged cells
mitochondria
organelle in cell where energy is made and stored
nuclear envelope
Double membrane structure that encloses the contents of the nucleus.
nuclear pores
complexes in nuclear envelope that allow for transport of molecules across the envelope both into and out of nucleus
nucleolus
dense spherical structure in nucleus during interphase and helps make ribosomes
