Describe the term “characteristics”
Features that make them identifiable. e.g. characteristics of a word processing software
Describe the term “capabilities”
List of their specifications and an indication of their suitability to perform a task e.g. capabilities of MS word
Describe the term “limitations”
Describes shortcomings. e.g. MS word can insert tables, but they are limited in size compared to excel.
Describe the application software
Helps in completing general production tasks. Some e.gs of application software include Entertainment software (type), Netflix (example).
Describe the system software
Allows the application software to operate on the computer. e.g. windows10, windows98
What are the jobs of the operating system?
Manages programs, manages memory, schedules job, configures devices, monitors performance.
Describe the utility software
Carries out tasks related to the running of the computer, its programs and files. e.g. anti-virus (Norton antivirus)
Describe Email (software for communication)
Transmission of messages via a computer network.
Describe web browsers
Allows you to view useful pages on the web.
Describe chat rooms
Permits users to chat to each other via the computer.
Describe newsgroups
It is also called a discussion and is an online area on the web where people conduct discussions about particular subjects.
Describe IM (instant messaging)
It notifies you when one or more people are online and allows you to exchange messages with them or join a chat room.
Describe video conferencing
Metting between 2 or more geographically separated people who use the internet to transmit audio or video data.
