Hold hearings, consider laws
What is the first step of a bill becoming a law
Begins with a problem and the sponsor (congressman) proposes a law
What happens after the sponsor proposes a law
The speaker will then pick a committee of relevance to discuss it
What happens when the committee votes on the law
Yes – is then debated by the full house
No – it is tabled = not going to happen
What happens when the full house debates the law and then votes
Yes – goes on to the Senate
No – goes back to the committee to rewrite or table it
What happens when the house approves the bill
The president of the Senate looks at it, he can send it to a committee to vote
When the president of the Senate send the bill to a committee to be voted on what happens
Yes – senate looks at it
No – conference (Committee of Senators and House of Representatives)
What happens when the full Senate votes
Yes – the bill is passed
No – it goes back to conference
After the bill is passed the president votes
Yes – signs it
No – it is to be towed and returns back to the Senate and House of Representatives
How much vote is required to override the presidents Veto
2/3 of the Senate and 2/3 of the house of reps
How are the senators of each state elected
Everyone in each state votes for the senators of their state
What is a single-member district
An area with one representative
Who draws the district lines
The State legislature
