Lecture 9 Immune System Flashcards
What’s immune system?
Body’s defense against diseases
Viruses
Non-living particles that contains genetic materials
Bacteria
Living organisms that have a metabolism
What are 3 lines of defense?
Nonspecific External Barriers
innate Immune System
Acquired Immune System
Role of Non-Specific External Defenses
Prevent viruses and bacteria from entering the body
NSED lines of defense example
Skin
Saliva
Cough reflex
Stomach Acid
What’s Innate Immune System?
Cells and mechanisms that defend host from infection
What’s Phagocytes?
Several types of white blood cells
Are white blood cells natural killer cells?
Yes
Is a fever a defense mechanism?
Yes
Purpose of Acquired Immune System
Gives immunity to certain diseases
Forms “memory” of the invading microbe
Pathogen (Antigen)
Substance that causes an immune system to produce antibodies
Antibody
Protein produced by immune system; tag destroys invasive microbes
What’s immunity?
Resistance to diseases
What are lymphocytes?
White blood cells that circulate in the bloodstream
