Lecture 8 Flashcards
Why do we evaluate arguments
to figuring out…….
- What is reasonable to believe (since we want to get at the truth)**
- What is not reasonable to believe ( since we want to avoid error)
Why shouldn’t you criticize an argument by merley denying it’s conclusion
it could be disconfirmation bias
What are three reasons to criticize and argument?
(a) If the argument is ill formed
(b) If the argument is valid
(c ) if the argument is cogent
What should you do if the argument is ill formed?
Point out that the premise doesn’t support the conclusion
What should you do if the argument is valid?
Focus on whether the premises are r/j/r to believe .
What should you do if the argument is cogent?
(i) whether the premise are r/i/r to believe
(ii) whether the argument is defeated
Why shouldn’t you accept an argument because you believe the conclusion?
- It could be conformation bias
- weak argument for true conclusions
Where should you direct criticisms?
On the Individual premise not rational/justified/reasonable to believe because either
(i) you have good reason to think the premise is false or
(ii) you have good reason to suspend judgment about it .
How should criticize Individual inferences?
As either invalid or not cogent
substantial criticism test?
ask yourself how a reasonable defender of the premise/ argument would react
What is substantial critisim
give reasons to think the premise
Is not r/j/r to believe because either
(I) you have good reason to think the premise is false or
(ii) you have good reason to suspend judgment about it
Why shouldn’t you accept the conclusion of two competing arguments? what should you do instead?
It’s self defeating. You cannot at same time think both argument are equally strong( While being rational).
so just suspend judgement
What is a compound argument?
compound argument is one that contains sub-argument
How should you critisize a compound argument?
- you should criticize the reason offered
- or the inference leading towards the conclusion.
What is exhaustive?
