Lecture 6 - Neurotransmitters Flashcards
what are the chemical classes of neurotransmitters?
- acetylcholine
- amines
- amino acids
- peptides/neuropeptides
what are the three categories of amines?
- catecholamines (dopamine, noradrenaline, adrenaline)
- serotonin
- histamine
what is the amino acid GABA?
gamma-aminobutyric acid
inhibitory neurotransmitter
how is the neurotransmitter effect (depol/hyperpol) determined?
by the receptor type of the postsynaptic neuron
is GABA inhibitory or excitatory?
inhibitory
is glutamine inhibitory or excitatory?
excitatory
is acetylcholine inhibitory or excitatory?
excitatory at neuromuscular junction in skeletal muscle and inhibitory in cardiac muscle
what does an autorecepetor do?
inhibits the release of more neurotransmitter
what are the 2 types of receptors?
ligand gated receptors (opens/closes ion channel)
G protein-linked receptors (transmembrane protein complexes)
what does cholinergic receptors bind to?
ACh
what do adrenergic receptors bind to?
noradrenaline & adrenaline
what are GABAa receptors?
transmembrane ion channel, inhibitory, binding for drugs - reduces brain activity
what are GABAb receptors?
alter metabolism in postsynaptic cell by reducing enzyme activity in postsynaptic neuron
