lecture 6 Flashcards
Sympathetic Nervous System
primes body for action/stress
fight rather than flight
Parasympathetic nervous system
Promotes maintenance of body at rest
Three Major Categories of Biotoxins
Defense, Subduing Prey, and Fighting for mates
Venoms
injected into flesh
Poison
needs to be swallowed or consumed/inhaled
4 types of biotoxins
neurotoxins, hemotoxins, apitoxins (inflammation of tissue), and cytotoxins (cell death)
theory on how toxic substances evolved
Evolved from lizards to catch prey – could be overactive digestive enzymes – so defense and for eating food
Plant Secondary Compounds
Plant toxins for defense against animals. Happens when plants are stressed, not essential but helpful
ex: Cassava Root – stresses in drought then poisons with cyanide
