LECTURE 5: METABOLISM Flashcards
Derived from Greek word “metabolismos” → “to change or alter”
METABOLISM
“to change or alter”
METABOLISM
The chemical process of transforming foods into complex tissue elements and of transforming complex body substances into simple ones, along with the production of
heat and energy
METABOLISM
– force or power that enables the body to do its work
ENERGY
the UNIT OF ENERGY commonly used in human nutrition (also called kilogram calorie; kilocalorie)
CALORIE
- standard unit in measuring heat
- unit of measurement for energy our body gets from food
– By-products when carbohydrates, protein and fats are oxidized in the body
CALORIE
The total calorie content (total energy) available from food can be measured by means of a device called
BOMB CALORIMETER
measure of energy needed by the body at rest for all its internal chemical activities
Basal metabolism
Indicates the amount of energy needed to suction the life processes:
Basal Metabolism
the rate of basal metabolism in a given person at a given time & situation
Basal metabolic rate (BMR)
Basal metabolic rate (BMR) synonymous to BEE
Basal Energy Expenditure (BEE)
- use the rule of thumb
- 1 kcal/kg/hour for adult male
- 0.9 kcal/kg/hour for female adult
SIMPLE METHOD
developed in 1909, using information on weight, height, age, sex
Harris-Benedict Formula –
in obtaining the metabolic or fat-free body size
Biologic Body weight raised to the 3⁄4 power
<18.5
UNDERWEIGHT
