lecture 5 Flashcards
Amino acids are joint together by?
Peptide bonds
When amino acids are bonded in a peptide or protein they are called?
Amino acid residues
Each protein is made up of at least one type of chain?
Polypeptide
How are amino acid residues in a polypeptide chain numbered?
Starting from the amino terminus to carboxyl terminus
What causes the main chain to double back on itself forming a compact shape?
The globular shape
What does the globular structure mainly comprised of?
Alpha helix and beta structure turns
What are the four levels of protein structure?
Primary
secondary
tertiary
quaternary
What is the primary structure?
amino acid sequence
What is secondary structure?
Local 3D arrangement of a protein chain over a short stretch of adjacent amino acid residues
What is tertiary structure?
3D structure of a complete protein chain
What is Quaternary structure?
interchain packing and structure for a protein that contains multiple protein chains
What are the main chain atoms in a protein?
Nitrogen, alpha carbon, Carbon
What is the chain angle between C’ and N?
Omega, either 180 or 0 degrees
What is the chain angle between N and alphaC?
Phi, 0-180 degrees
What is the chain angle C’ and alphaC?
psi, 0-180 degrees
What is the phi angle?
Rotation angle around the N-alphaC
