Lecture 4: Object Perception Flashcards
3 Reasons why it’s so difficult for machine to perceive
1) stimulus on receptors is ambiguous
2) objects can be hidden or blurred
3) objects look different from different viewpoints
Inverse projection problem
an image on retina can be caused by an infinite number of objects
Viewpoint invariance
ability to recognise an object regardless of the viewpoint
2 characteristics of Perceptual organisation approach- Wundt
1) perceptions are created by combining elements called sensations
2) structuralism could not explain apparent movement
Theory of unconscious inference
Helmholtz, explain why stimuli can be interpreted in more than one way
Likelihood principle
objects are perceived based on what is most likely to have caused the pattern
How do feature detectors respond to a scene
tiling
What is tiling?
columns working together to cover entire visual scene
Object discrimination and what inhibits this?
picking the correct shape, lesioning in the temporal lobe
Landmark discrimination and what inhibits this?
picking the closer option, lesioning in parietal lobe
What pathway
ventral pathway from occipital lobe to temporal lobe
Where pathway
dorsal pathway from occipital lobe to parietal lobe
