Lecture #4 Flashcards
What is folk classification?
Judgement based descriptions of plants, non binomial
What is the oldest plant book?
Nova Plantarum Genre: New Genre of plants
-By Pier Antonio Micheli
Who standardized the use of binomials?
Linnaeus
What does it mean if there is an L beside the description of a plant
If someone feels the need to reclassify a plant, then they can as long as they put the L beside it because Linneaus still described it first
What is Adanson and Numerical taxonomy?
Counting characteristics nd creating a numeric similarity score
- something compared to itself is 100% similar
- The greater the similarity the closer the branching
How do we define branches of phylogenetic trees?
by synapomorphies (shared derived characteristics)
What genes do we use in order to make phylogenetic trees?
Ribosomal DNA because its in all organisms
Pros and Cons of Protein coding genes?
- Can be very useful and informative
- If its coding a protein that the environment has selected for to make it more successful in that environment, this could throw off the comparison
What kind of organisms are mosaics of their own and others histories?
Bacteria because they frequently swap bits of DNA
-latteral gene transfer messes up models of molecular evolution
What is the Barcode region?
A gene that is going to present across all the examples you’d want to test
What is a Flora?
A book that lists the species of plant inhabiting an area
What is an APG?
Angiosperm Phylogeny Group
-only consists of angiosperms, excludes gymnosperms and ferns
