Lecture 31 Flashcards
What are lipoprotein particles carriers of?
Carriers of TG and Cholestrol.
How many types of lipoprotein are there?
5 types of lipoproteins. From largest density to lowest denstity they are: 1. Chylomicrons 2.Very low Density Lipoproteins(VLDL) 3.Intermediate Density Lipoprotein (IDL) 4.Low density lipoprotein (LDL) 5.High density lipoprotein (HDL)
What are Chylomicrons?
Lipoprotein particles that transport dietary lipids from the intestines to other locations of in the body
VLDL function:
They move cholestrol , triglycerides and other lipids from the liver to other parts of the body. VLDL contain high amounts of triglycerides.
IDL function
-Refers to a density that is between low and very low density lipoprotein. They are formed from the degredation of VLDLs.
*LDL
Are sometimes refered to as bad cholestrol. because they can transport their content of lipid molecules into artery walls, attract macrophages and drive atherosclerosis.
*HDL
Are often called good cholestrol because they remove lipid molecules from macrophages in the wall of arteries.
Lipitor/ Statins
- Reduces the levels of “Bad cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood.
- increases levels of “good” cholestrol
- Used to treat high cholestrol and lower the risk of stroke or heart attak in people with type 2 diabetes or coronary heart diseas.
What are the effects of statins on dental health?
It causes a range of symptoms:
- Dry mouth
- Itchiness
- Bitterness
- Cough
