Disease
abnormal, medically defined changes in the structure or functioning of the human body
Illness
the individuals experience or subjective perception of lack of physical or mental well-being and consequent inability to function normally in social roles
Infectious disease
an illness due to a specific infectious agent or its toxic products that arises through transmission of that agent or its products from an infected person, animal or reservoir to a susceptible host
Outbreak
occurence of new cases in excess of baseline
Epidemic
less localized than outbreak
Pandemic
crossing international boundaries, large number of people
Chronic disease
noncommunicable diseases also know as chronic diseases that are not passed from person to person
are of long duration and generally slow progression
Primary prevention
the maintenance of health through individual or community efforts so that the disease process never starts
Secondary prevention
reduction in expression and severity of disease
does not prevent disease occurrence but identifies asymptotic individuals and delays onset and duration of clinical disease
Tertiary prevention
slow or block the progression of disease
reduces impairments and disabilities to improve QOL
implemented after clinical diagnosis
