lecture 23 - human genome 2 Flashcards
What is comparative genetics?
A process of comparing the DNA sequences of individuals to identify shared and variant features.
What are features that are common between two individuals called?
‘conserved’
What is aligning in comparative genomics?
A process in which two DNA sequences are line up next to each other at matching locations so that differences in BP sequence and therefore genes, can be identified.
What species do humans share all of their genes with?
Chimpanzees
How do human and chimpanzee genomes differ when we share an identical set of genes?
Humans have 35 milllion single nucleotide changes and 5 million insertion/deletion events.
What bipedal species did homo sapiens (humans) interbreed with?
Neanderthals and Denisovans
