Lecture 2 - Foreign Activators Flashcards
Define foreign activators
Molecules that originate outside of the body
e.g microbes, allergens, foreign tissues
In what time frame after infection does the innate immune response occur?
6-12 hours
In what time frame after infection does the adaptive immune response occur?
12hrs-7 days
What are soluble receptors and where are they found?
Receptors secreted from cells, they are found in: Blood Plasma Lymph Mucosal secretions
What are cell surface receptors and where are they found?
Receptors found on the surface of cells, they are fund on: Macrophages Neutrophils Lymphocytes Other somatic cells
True or false, both innate and adaptive system receptors can discriminate self and non self antigens?
True
How are innate receptors encoded and what does this mean with regards to diversity?
They are encoded into the germline, meaning they have limited diversity
How are adaptive receptors encoded and what does this mean with regards to diversity?
They are encoded by genes, meaning they have massive diversity
Do innate cell receptors generally recognise structures common to or unique to different microbes?
Common to different microbes
Do adaptive cell receptors generally recognise structures common to or unique to different microbes?
Unique to different microbes
Which branch of the immune system’s receptors are pre coded in order to produce a more rapid response, innate or adaptive?
Innate
