Lecture 18: Autonomic Nervous System Flashcards
Sympathetic originates from spinal cord levels
T1-L2
Parasympathetic originates from
Cranial nerves 3, 7, 9, 10 and S2-4
Preganglionic neuron
Always myelinated
Synapse with postganglionic neurons
Utilize acetylcholine
Postganglionic neuron
Originates from ganglion
Never myelinated
Generally utilizes norepinepherine
Parasympathetic nerve synapse where and function
Synapse on microscopic ganglion cells in walls of target organs
Responsible for maintaining and coordinating gut function
Sympathetic nerves synapse where and function
Synapse on cells in large ganglia located in dorsal wall of coelom
Involved in responses related to anger, fear, anxiety
(close sphincters, constrict blood flow to gut, etc..)
Thoracic sympathetic chain
Includes cervical ganglia
12 thoracic ganglia pairs referred to as stellate ganglion
Preganglionic sympathetic supply to thoracic viscera are from
T1-T5
Postganglionic sympathetic supply to thoracic viscera are
Cervical ganglia
T1-T5 paravertebral ganglia
Greater splanchnic nerve synapses where
Celiac ganglion
Lesser splanchnic nerve synapses where
Aorticorenal ganglion
Least splanchnic nerve synapses
Superior mesenteric ganglion
Lumbar splanchnic nerve synapses
Inferior mesenteric ganglion
Splanchnic nerves supply
Abdominal viscera
Vagus nerve (CN X) supplys
Thoracic and abdominal viscera
