Lecture 12: Control Banding Flashcards
Control banding, definition and process
simplify the process of risk assessment and control, bands of exposure controls, made by pharmaceutical companies and chemical companies because they make new chemicals for which there is no standard. also limits on ability of small and medium companies to comply with OELs
chemical is grouped in a band based on international criteria, amt of chemical in use, volatility and dustiness. Single control technology is applied across entire band
what does COSHH require? give back?
control of substances hazardous to health
requires: type of task, hazard classification, volatility, amount used in task
gives back: control band, advice on controlling risk, provides written guidance
4 recommended strategies for control banding. what is missing?
- employ good hygiene practice
- use local exhaust ventilation
- enclose the process
- seek the advice of a specialist
no requirement for PPE (too much work) so they just ignore it
International Chemical toolkit gives some guidance on PPE to use
