Define translation.

Define the interlingual translation of the Jakobson’s categories.
Interlingual translation, or “translation proper”: ‘an interpretation of verbal signs by means of some other language.’

Intralingual translation, or “rewording”: ‘an interpretation of verbal signs by means of other signs of the same language.’
Define the intersemiotic translation of the Jakobson’s categories.
Intersemiotic translation, or “transmutation”: ’an interpretation of verbal signs by means of signs of non-verbal sign system.’
Define translation studies.
Translation studies is an academic discipline that is concerned with the complex of problems clustered round the phenomenon of translating and translation.
Explain how translation studies become more prominent.
First, there has been proliferation of specialized translating and interpreting courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate level. Second, a proliferation of conferences, books and journals on translation in many languages. Thirdly, international organizations have also prospered.
Give a brief history of the discipline (translation studies).
First, the practice of translation was discussed by Cicero and Horace in the first century BCE. Followed by St Jerome in the fourth century CE, he approached translating the Greek Septuagint into Latin. However, the practice of translating developed into an academic discipline in the second half of the twentieth century. Then in the USA, literary translation was promoted in universities in the 1960s by the translation workshop. Lastly, in 1964, Eugène Nida used the word science in his book. And thus, it continued toward a science of translation.
