lecture 1 Flashcards
what is pharmacodynamics
the action of a drug on the body through its receptor interactions. biochemical and physiological effect of drugs
what is a drug and its use
it is a substance used in the treatment od a disease
a synthetic or non biological substance synthesized outside of the body that produces effects or alters bodily functions.
USAGE: therapeutics or recreational or illegal purposes
what is pharmacology?
a study of drugs includong origin, chemistry, nature, effects and mechanisms of action.
an actie ingredient: a substnace in a drug that is pharmacologically active.
what is pharmacokinetics
it is the action of the body on a drug suxh as the absorption, distribution and elimination
how do humans use drug olants compounds?
ritual, religious or magical use, medicinal use, toxic or poisonous use, recreational use (marijuana),
example of medicinal plant
willow species used to treat gout, rheumatism, toothache et earache and mostly has an active ingredient of glycoside broken into salicylic acid when digested ans commony known as aspirin
another example of medical plant
coffea arabica
example of plant used for murder
conium maculatum or poison hemlock ehich have an active compound named alkaloid by the name of coniine and was used to kill socrates
living organisms are organized into how many domains and what are they?
bacteria, archaea and eukaryota
nomenclature was done by who?
Carl Linnaeus and foe plants we need to knom their phylum, family and genus and species
important groups to know
kingdom fungi- fungi and fungi often contain hallucinogenic compounds
kingdom plantae- phylum ginkgophyta (ginkgo) Phylum Cycadophyta- Cycas
Phylum Gnetophyta Ephedra
Kingdom Plantae
Phylum Anthophyta- Angiosperms (Flowering Plants)
Plant phylum with the most diversity Includes hundreds of thousands of specimens
active ingredient
Substance in a drug that is pharmacologically active or delivers a specific effect
the witch brew
drug induced hallucinatory experience leading to believing to the idea that witches fly on broomsticks
atropine and scopolamine
active ingredients from the Solanacaea family
Willow species
active ingredient in salicin it is used in aspirin
